CHOOSING A CHALLENGING CAREER

     I was thinking of what I can write about my journal for days. When I completed my 'education' homework, I realized that it was 'Teacher's Day' a few days ago. Then, I said myself 'Why don't I talk about this topic?'.


     As a teacher candidate, this year's teacher's day was import for me. This year, I took a real step to be a teacher. I began to understand what being a teacher really means. For example; previously, I didn't know its disadvantages. I knew only the good sides of it; because when my teachers came to the lesson, they seemed generally happy. But I saw the other sides of being teacher.


     It will be a good choice for ones who like teaching and children. They enjoy the lessons. They can see the advantages of being teacher. These can be health benefits or not teaching at weekends, holidays, and the summer. Knowing that you're making a difference can be added to these advantages.

     I found a video about good sides of being a teacher. This video shows good sides of being teacher. It mentions top 10 reasons to be a teacher:

• To share joy of learning with young students
• To help children experience success
• To make a difference in a child's life
• To instill a love of learning
• The oppurtunity to shape young minds
• To be a constant support system
• The opportunity to show your creative side
• Watching children develop knowledge and character
• Being a compassionate adult figure
• To turn the love of learning into a love of teaching

REWRITING THE PHRAGRAPHS

EXERCISE 1

Our beagle loves hunting. When someone opens the back door for her, she barrels down porch steps into the yard. She runs back and forth across the lawn in ecstasy. Her nose scans the wet grass for scents. Those are scents of cats, rabbits and other living creatures which are too subtle to detect. She sniffs and spins her tail in quick circles. It spins clockwise at first. Then, it spins counterclockwise. Those two activities always occur together. They are sniffing and spinning. They seem to propel her along.

EXERCISE 2

The Government Printing Office in Washington D.C.  is a source of much useful information. Not many people know about it. However, it publishes pamphlets and books on a vast number of subjects. These subjects vary from the dangers of x-rays, home sets to the identification of musrooms. Approximately 27 000 publications are offered by means of the superintendent of documents. Many of them are cheap. There is no charge at all for some of them.

EXERCISE 3    

A man who was a German immigrant reaped America’s first fortune. His name was John Astor. He made his first money by trading Indian furs. He was lowborn and uneducated, that’s why he never learned to speak English properly. He carried on his business to the end in an accent. The accent was redolent of the Hamburg gutters.

Reasons Why People Don’t Sleep In University

Why I chose this topic?

When I was studying, I realized that I was often yawning. I asked myself, why? Then I decided to write about somethings about  this topic. I opened the youtube and searched ‘studying not sleeping’.

About the Video

In the video there is a man who made this video. He is making this video for a survey. He asks his friends ‘why you are not sleeping?’ He wants them to give a reason for their not sleeping. The first one says ‘studying’. Then the other ones say sometings like playing football, drinking a lot of coffee etc.. But the majority of them say ‘studying’. One of the answers interested me more. A girl says: ‘I have too much work to do.’ I think it is the best answer.

In the end of the video, the boy who make the video is turning the camera to himself. Someone asks him the same question: Why you are not sleeping? It is the last and the most impressive answer of video: ‘I am making a survey about people not sleeping.

My Personal Opinions 

We have a lot of homeworks, midterms, quizzes etc these days. That’s why it is a really meaningful video for me. There is message in this video : Students are sleepless because of the must of studying. We have to study, but we need to fun at the same time. For instance, I want to watch a tv serial  at the moment, but I have to study. Moreover, I have to study not only for this lesson but also French midterm. Due to this reasons, it seems I am not going to sleep this night.

BEING A STUDENT AT METU

            I had some adaptation problems at METU when I first came here.. It was difficult for me to get used to a new environment. I had a lot of prejudices about new friends, new city, new school… Luckily, I got accustomed to all of them.

            When I first came to METU, I was scared of the size of campus. Its ways are too complicated. Due to the fact that I came from a small city, it was very big and confusing for me. Nevertheless, being at such a big university was unusual and nice.

            In my highschool times, my dream was to get score that is enough for Boğaziçi University and to go to METU. Hence, even if I didn’t get a enough score for Boğaziçi, at least I could come to METU. If I say this with another words, METU was my dream.

            Being here is wonderful. I can feel myself as a university student. It is really different from high school. We are not child anymore. We are adult now. I can feel this here.

            I addition to this advantages, being a student at METU brings some responsibilities, of course. I have lessons at which teachers always speak  English. Although I am a foreign language student, sometimes I have difficulties in understanding these lessons. But it is actually good thing. At high school times, I didn’t make enough listening or speaking exercises, so I was not enough qualified for being a foreign language student. Knowing English well is obligatory here.  That’s why, I hope I can get used to this as soon as possible.

If I talk about the dormitory, I can say we are very lucky for being METU student. I have never stayed in a dormitory. Hence, I didn’t know dormitories’ enviorenment. However, when I came this dormitory, I realized that it is really wonderful in terms of being together with friends, studying altogether etc. I think there is nowhere else like this dormitory I can much more like.

To improve ourselves, METU is the best place. In high school, I didn’t have enough time for this. I was studying all the time. But here I have a lot of time and opportunities.. There are a number of activity clubs at METU. I have loved them.

Being a student at METU means to me feeling myself special. Being here is like being in a different world. I know when I graduate from this school, I will be a good teacher thanks to attending this university. =)
